BBC Eases Rules Related to RSS Feed Use
The BBC has opened up its content more so that people can use news stories and headlines on their own sites via RSS.
Revised licence terms mean other sites can integrate RSS feeds from the BBC without offline contract negotiations, as was previously the case. RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. It is a way of keeping automatically aware of website updates. BBC News and Sport have made their content available for online news reader programs via RSS since 2003. But this relaxing of the licence means a much more open approach, according to the BBC News website editor, Pete Clifton.

FyberSearch Officially Launches the XML Search Engine FeedPlex in Beta
The XML search engine FeedPlex was acquired by FyberSearch on November 1st 2004 and has now officially been released in beta. FeedPlex (http://www.feedplex.com) is a search engine that returns results in XML format, including RSS and RDF. FeedPlex was founded in the spring of 2004 by Sid Yadav and was acquired by the web search engine FyberSearch on September 1st, 2004. The XML files used in FeedPlex are crawled and cataloged by the FyberSearch web crawler FyberSpider. One bonus of having FyberSearch technology backing FeedPlex is that incoming links from non-XML web pages can be taken into consideration when ranking the XML files found in FeedPlex search results. Without FyberSearch, FeedPlex would have to crawl non-XML web pages for the sole purpose of counting the outgoing links but could not display them in search results because as they are not XML files. This would be a waste of computer resources. FyberSearch currently plans to continue developing FeedPlex with many advanced features, some personalization tools and a continuously growing index size. All feedback is appricated, especially as FeedPlex is still in beta testing stage. Try FeedPlex

The downside is the content quality is lacking - most items listed are worded as "get rich quick schemes" none-the-less, I hope more affiliate programs realizing the value of providing content with dynamic urls for affiliates. ING Using RSS for Internal Corporate Communications
ING employees are receiving a broad range of information via RSS, from benefits updates to new-hire announcements. If the experiment goes well-and why shouldn’t it?-RSS will roll out to 20,000 employees by the end of the year. The key benefit to employing RSS-at least from ING’s perspective-is consistent delivery. The article recalls an instance when new CEO Michael Tilmant sent an e-mail message to all employees, but because some e-mail filters delayed delivery, not everyone saw it at the same time. Using RSS also ensures delivery across different information systems installed at different business groups.

RSS is Google's Enemy?
Google's greatest enemy isn't Bill Gates. It isn't France, and it's not Yahoo! According to this article by Steve Rubel, the search network's biggest foe may very well be feeds. While Yahoo! and MSN have both been riding shotgun on the RSS Bandwagon, Google's held back with uncharacteristic reserve. Is this the same company that holds innovation high on their list of corporate values? What Rubel calls the "aha" moment comes when you take a look at the way Google views syndication in comparison to the mindsets of its competitors. Unlike Yahoo! and MSN, Google is all about attracting consumers, getting their AdWords dime, and then hustling them out the door. Syndication feeds are used to drive users to rather than from a site, thus Google's hesitation to do anything that might interfere with that revenue model. Rubel goes on to say the following: Feeds may be Google's greatest enemy. If Google did offer feeds that connected users with the information they are looking for from the Web they would miss the opportunity to advertise to them. Like Rubel, we're sure Google has already got a handle on a fix (contextual ads in feeds, perhaps?). They're just taking their sweet time about it... From SearchTools

Differing Opinions on RSS
Well reports are out and there could not be a starker difference between the pundits. While Slashdot asserts that according to a recent survey RSS use is expected to increase drammatically. "The Slashdot RSS Study explores current usage of RSS feeds and future applications for fulfilling daily information needs at the desktop as well as in new media platforms. Survey highlights of the 230 respondents include:" -- 73% will increase their use of RSS feeds in the next year. -- Most users received their feeds through a Web-based RSS syndication service but many users do not use traditional methods to read their feeds, instead relying on mobile and other devices to obtain their feeds. -- Receiving feeds through mobile units such as cell phones, SMS messaging, voice mail, WAP or portable audio players will increase. -- Technology will improve as RSS use increases, making RSS feeds easier for users to read and for publishers to deliver. JupiterResearch claims that RSS adoption is not really simple. "The hype is shifting from search engine marketing to RSS, the trendy abbreviation for really simple syndication or rich site summary, depending on who's doing the selling." "But a new report from JupiterResearch claims RSS will not have a significant effect as a supplemental alternative to e-mail marketing." "Most marketers remain skeptical of using RSS as a mechanism to supplement their e-mail marketing newsletter content," states the report written by JupiterResearch's David Daniels, Zori Bayriamova and Eric T. Peterson. While industry professionals like Rok Hrastnik of Marketing Studies defends RSS as a misunderstood technology, it is clear that there is still lots of room for education. The potential of RSS is significant a little education will go a long way!

Google Faces a Law Suit Over Syndication
Agence France-Presse (AFP) has sued internet search giant Google for $17.5 million in damages for copyright infringement. The news agency, which is headquartered in Paris, says that Google has been publishing photos, headlines and news stories without AFP permission on its popular Google News Beta. "We allow publishers to opt out of Google News but most publishers want to be included because they believe it is a benefit to them and to their readers," Google spokesman Steve Langdon told Reuters. AFP sells subscriptions for its news content to some 600 clients; however, the company alleges that Google's search engine crawler has been grabbing and displaying their media content on Google News for free. The decision could have serious implications for the future of RSS and syndication. AFP's content is available in a feed. The suit could be a significant blow to syndication as we know it.

RSS For Business
RSS, or Really Simple Syndication, is a new way to broadcast corporate news and structured information. RSS offers a quick, easy corporate communication channel. The RSS contents are published as a feed and the feed's content keep customers, partners and journalists abreast of corporate news and information. The RSS feeds are read using a tool referred to as a news aggregator, or an RSS reader. The aggregator periodically checks to see if the RSS feed has been updated. As the feed is updated, new information will automatically appear in the RSS reader. While RSS was at one point only considered to be a means to deliver news headlines, RSS has quickly become a powerful medium to disseminate all kinds of information. As traditional marketers are attempting to rein in content delivery, measuring e-mail open rates, click-throughs and conversions, Internet users are fighting to gain control over the content they receive. Savvy marketers and business owners are using RSS as a way to improve corporate communication and increase their external exposure and brand appeal. Complete Article - RSS for Business

Lee Underwood of WebReference.com's RSS Review
RSS technology is really taking off. According to a recent study, 5% of Internet users say they use RSS. That's almost 46,700,000 users! Most news sites now publish RSS feeds. Aside from news, these feeds can also be used for announcing new products, Web site updates, blogs and anything else to keep your visitors informed. WebReference even has a list of RSS feeds for many of the Web sites on internet.com. RSS feeds allow users to view a large amount of information without having to visit several Web sites to obtain it. This information can be gathered by an RSS reader ("aggregator") and read in one place and is described as "syndicating content." As a Web developer, part of your job may be to create RSS feeds or develop a method that a client can use directly. In the past, this was usually done manually or through the use of Perl scripts, but now there are several software applications that make the creation process much easier. MediaPost Thinks RSS Might Be Ready for Prime Time
MediaPost offered this analysis related to RSS' progress. For now, less than 5 percent of Internet users currently employ RSS readers. That minority consists mainly of media and tech professionals, and bloggers who contend with information overload on a daily basis. But analysts say that RSS could quickly shed its niche status if consumers realize they no longer have to surf from Web site to Web site, scrolling their favorites menu for content. Instead, RSS readers pull in headlines and text continually, allowing users to create customized content from publishers, blogs, and search engines. Most offer alerts, which bring everything from product releases, sports scores, and natural disasters to users' immediate attention. Complete Article

RSS: News You Choose
Publishers and webmasters provide content and news in an RSS feed. Users view the content of interest in an RSS reader or news aggregator. The aggregator or reader contains the collection of feeds that are of interest to the user. As the RSS feed is updated the content in the reader or aggregator updates with the new information. At any point, users can remove a feed from their aggregator or reader and no longer receive information from that source. Ultimately, the user is choosing the news and content they wish to view. RSS2HTML.com : Free Service Displays RSS Feeds As HTML
A free service at RSS2HTML.com has been launched. RSS2HTML.com displays RSS feeds as web pages. In three short steps site visitors can convert their RSS feed, into a viewable web page. They simply select the webpage template, the color scheme and then enter the URL of the RSS feed. The RSS2HTML.com site then generates a new URL based on the user's choices. Once entered into a web browser the generated URL will display the RSS feed as a regular webpage. Webmasters can use the service to create a static web page that will display RSS feeds containing text, images and even an audio podcasts or video. The service on RSS2HTML.com displays any RSS feeds that adheres to most RSS specifications, including versions 2.0, 1.0, 0.93, 0.92, 0.91 or 0.90. Because RSS is based in XML, it normally cannot easily be viewed in a web browser. The free service on RSS2html.com has been made available to publishers and webmasters who are unable to host the free FeedForAll rss2html.php script that NotePage has recently released. Understanding the significant benefit of providing site visitors the ability to view RSS feeds in a web browser, NotePage has made this service available free of charge. Additional details and a step by step walk-through can be found on http://www.rss2html.com The rss2html.com service is available from NotePage, Inc., makers of the popular RSS feed creation software, FeedForAll. FeedForAll's software enables webmaster to create, edit, manage and publish RSS feeds. RSS has evolved into a popular means to syndicate headlines and distribute content on the Internet. RSS and Privacy Issues
Nick Bradbury posted a really interesting piece related to RSS and privacy. He had been approached by companies interested in having their feeds setup in the downloadable version of FeedDemon. Nick felt he could not accomodate the request without collecting and releasing statistical data. The collection of statistical data would cause FeedDemon to be viewed in an unfavorable light. In any event the post and ensuing comments clearly show that users are willing to pay for their privacy even if they have nothing to hide. My personal view is that the fact that users do not have to release any personal information to subscribe or unsubscribe from a feed is one of the huge reasons that RSS has been succesful.

PubSub Provides Earth-quake Alerts
PubSub Concepts, Inc., a technology company based in New York City, has added real-time earthquake data from the US Geological Survey (USGS) to its Internet-scale matching engine. PubSub is a tool to monitor and receive instant updates on new information as it's published via blogs, press releases, SEC filings, newsgroups, and other sources. To receive notifications from PubSub on earthquake activity for particular regions and magnitudes, consumers follow three steps: Go to www.pubsub.com/earthquakes.php; Choose one or more regions of the world from the map and select the magnitude above which notification is requested; and Choose where to receive notifications. Notifications can be sent to any device that accepts email, such as a computer or a personal digital assistant (PDA), like a wireless-enabled Palm Pilot. Or consumers can download the instant messaging-based PubSub Sidebar for Internet Explorer or Firefox, which allows earthquake notifications to stream into their Web browsers in real-time. Users can also receive notifications via RSS feeds, which are fed to a reader like My Yahoo!, Bloglines, or FeedDemon.

Why RSS News Feeds
Outfront has written a really great piece about RSS feeds and the benefits of RSS over email as a communication medium. RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. It's a wonderfully uncomplicated way to get information from a publisher to the subscribers who want that information. it's a very promising way to bypass the drawbacks of email as a delivery system for newsletters and similar content. There are 2 major drawbacks of email as a delivery system. One is spam filters. My newsletter is very likely to go directly to your junk mail folder or worse if I accidentally place a banned word such as "free" in it. Furthermore, my newsletter gets blacklisted by services such as hotmail and yahoo mail if just one of their users decides to click on the "this is spam" link while viewing my message. There are actually many more issues than I can count between honest newsletters and spam filters, but you get the idea. Complete Article - Why RSS News Feeds

Free RSS to HTML PHP Script
A free PHP script, rss2html.php, that converts RSS feeds to HTML has been made freely available by NotePage, Inc. The rss2html.php script allows webmasters to display RSS feeds on their website. RSS or Really Simple Syndication, as it is commonly known, is a technology that gives webmasters the ability to to easily distribute and publish syndicated content on the Internet. Most webmasters understand the potential benefits of making RSS feeds available for viewing in a web browser. FeedForAll's new rss2html.php script allows users to create webpages that will always display the most current information from the RSS feed, and because the resulting page is pure HTML, it will be in a format friendly to search engine robots. Using rss2html.php webmasters can customize the format and look of the web page created from the feed. The RSS feed's contents can easily be integrated into an existing website's theme. The rss2html.php script parses the RSS file, extracts the pertinent information, formats it, and serves it up as regular HTML. The rss2html.php script runs on any webserver that can run PHP scripts, and it support feeds in the RSS 2.0, .93, .92, .91, or .90 format. Additional details and a download for the free script can be found at http://www.feedforall.com/free-php-script.htm The new rss2html.php script is available from NotePage, Inc., makers of the popular RSS feed creation software, FeedForAll. Apple's iPod Shuffle Stifles Podcasting
Apple's latest iPod may be winning accolades from music lovers but it is raising eyebrows in the blogosphere. When CEO Steve Jobs took the wraps off the flash-memory iPod shuffle, a few gasps could be heard from bloggers who post audio files of their conversations -- a practice commonly referred to as podcasting. For those new to the concept, podcasting is a version of Webcasting that first became popular with iPod owners. According to online encyclopedia Wikipedia, podcasters make their audio programs available for download to portable digital audio devices (iPod, MP3 player, PDA). Similar to the way TiVo time-shifts video, podcasting lets the audience download and listen later. Complete Article

RSS A Year in Review
My predication is that 2005 will be the year of RSS. With podcasting hot on it's heals the RSS standard will catch fire and consumers will embrace RSS as a means to negate spam. Webmasters and publishers will continue to find unique and innovative ways to use RSS as a communication medium including all sorts of content in feeds. I believe that in 2005 RSS will become independent of blogs and represent far more content. Podcasting will assist with this as it is used for self-guided walking tours, training sessions, and radio on demand talk shows. Showing how truly versatile RSS can be. (For those unfamiliar with podcasting it is simply an RSS feed that includes and audio file in the enclosure tag.)

We've located a new RSS Feed Directory. Feed-Directory.com, is a complete directory of syndicated feeds. With over several thousand feeds in its database, Feed-Directory.com is one of the biggest feed directories on the web, and every day several thousand more are added. The complete internet is crawled by a special feed spider that tries to identify RSS and Atom feeds. This process takes several weeks, and is never finished. If you'd like to speed up this process, you can submit your feed now by clicking on the 'Add Your Feed' link on top. It will take up to 24-48 hours for your feed to appear in the directory.

Corrected Url for RSS Benefits Article
Randy from Kbcafe was kind enough to alert me to a broken url in the RSS Benefit article posted on wednesday. The article details the Benefits to RSS: RSS streamlines communication between publishers and readers. Since RSS has had a popularity surge, webmasters have been experimenting and using RSS feeds to deliver content in new and innovative ways. Typically, RSS feeds contain news headlines and content summaries. The content summaries contain just enough information without overwhelming the reader with superfluous details. If the reader is interested and wants additional information they can click on the item in the feed, accessing the website which contains additional details. RSS readers aggregate multiple feeds, making it easy for individuals to quickly scan information contained within each feed. Feeds are generally themed, allowing users to opt-in to feeds that are of interest. Complete Benefits to RSS Article

New Article Benefits to RSS
The big benefit to RSS is that individuals opt-in to content of interest, totally controlling the flow of information that they receive. If the quality of the content in the feed declines, users simply remove the feed from their RSS reader and they will not receive any additional updates from that source. The RSS reader acts as an aggregator, allowing users to view and scan multiple content streams in a timely fashion. Complete Article - Benefits to RSS

Article Explaining RSS from The Standard
The term RSS refers to a syndication format, sometimes known as Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary. Each RSS feed is simply a text document containing a list of content items. The text document contains the headline, description and link for content items available on a web site. Why RSS? This format may look strange in a web browser, perhaps even unreadable, but there are a range of tools and technologies that leverage this common standard formatting. Similarly, HTML tagging, the code behind a web page, is unreadable unless viewed via a web browser which understands how to present the HTML code. Rather than use a web browser or even a text editor to view a particular RSS feed, you will view RSS feeds through RSS readers. Great Article About RSS

Open Access RSS Directory Proposed
Robin Good has proposed an interesting idea related to RSS - "It is important to acknowledge though the issue of free content re-use when many of the content originators want to enforce tight controls on the use and re-syndication of their news. I have recently catalyzed some attention around the issue of content re-use by engaging relatively small traditional publisher who uses the Internet for syndicating press-releases from major outlets, into evaluating whether my RSSification of his content headlines and further public distribution was legal, appropriate and beneficial. Blogger Selling Self on Ebay
"Blogging gives your customers a real view into your company in ways that newsletters and seminars simply aren't able to do." says Jeremy Wright, who writes the popular Ensight business and technical blog, which is read by more than 60,000 readers a month, and is up for auction on the internet auction site eBay as a professional blogger for. Mr. Wright confesses on his own blog that what he is doing is nothing more than a stunt to raise the profile of blogging. Plus, being a writer as well as a consultant in a past life, he knows that he can help companies figure out if blogging is the right space for them to be looking at. The winner of the auction will be able to have Jeremy Wright work for them for three months. He will produce between 5-10 posts a week. In addition, Mr. Wright would work with the winning bidder to see what potential there is for blogging for them and their company - in effect acting as a blogging consultant for the period. According to The Blog Herald,"We'd naturally be skeptical of such an endeavor but Jeremy is a top blogger with a strong background in writing, although the current bidding price at the time of writing of $112.73 USD greatly undervalues his services." Dynamic Content that Appears Static - Search Engines Will Love You!
There is nothing search engines like more than static content that changes on a regular basis. Yesterday we implemented a php script to dynamically pull content from our RSS feed. The best thing is that search engines "see" the actual content of the feed as a part of the web page. Meaning the contents of the RSS feed will be spidered which should help search engine ranking. The script was surprisingly easy to use and will be available for free use in a few days on the FeedForAll website. Simply email them if you want to be notified when the script is available.

Experiment in News Aggregation
A web is attempting an interesting experiment in news aggregation using RSS feeds. The site, 10x10, parses Reuters, the BBC and the New York Times so far, and performs what the author describes as an elaborate process of weighted linguistic analysis on the text. It then makes automatic conclusions based on the hour's important words and are linked with appropriate pictures from the web site.

Do I Need a Feed?
Do I Need an RSS Feed? RSS has been around for more than 10 years but has only recently become popular. RSS provides headlines and summaries of information in a concise and standardized way. Benefits for Publishers 1.) Avoid Spam Filters Statisticians estimate that 70% of the email transferred each day is spam (unsolicited email). With that statistic, even opt-in users risk losing valuable messages in the cesspool of spam. RSS feeds effectively nullify spam as an issue. Requesting feeds allow users to maintain complete control over the content they view. Users can easily opt-in and out of feeds that provide content of interest or importance. 2.) Expanded Reach RSS allows publishers to reach a number of new and different markets that typically are less crowded with competition. Many small businesses are often slow to adopt or learn new technologies, giving businesses that lead the way a competitive advantage. 3.) Content Syndication Syndication of feeds increases exposure. 4.) Repeat Visitors RSS is all about repeat visitors. Users who have previously visited a site often have a stronger connection to the site and are more likely to purchase or trust the information on the site. 5.) Free Web Traffic As the internet has evolved, many webmasters have found that what was once free traffic must now be paid for in order to sustain decent visitor statistics. RSS is in a unique position to bring free traffic because they are content-driven, and if they include interesting or valuable information, will pique the curiosity of web-surfers and entice them to visit a particular site. 6.) Less Effort Newsletters and E-zines undeniably bring visitors, but the effort involved in creating, distributing and maintaining a newsletter can be a burden. Maintaining the list, ensuring the list is clean, growing the subscriber base, updating and removing bad e-mail addresses, all take time. RSS feeds are not burdened with those issues. There are easy-to-use RSS feed creation tools that require little effort, allowing publishers to recycle content, often simply cutting and pasting into RSS feed creation software. Complete Article

The Evolution of Enclosures
The RSS (define) syndication format has spread like wildfire through the Internet, permeating most news sites and virtually all blogs. Now there's a new aspect of RSS ready to enjoy the same popularity. Called RSS enclosures, they're the next step in the RSS revolution and hold great potential. One of the uses of enclosures is "podcasting," a name that is derived from Apple's iPod, though the technology can be utilized on any MP3-capable device. The RSS enclosure feature allows for the syndicated XML (define) feed to not just serve text content, but also to package an enclosure (call it an attachment of some sort), as well. In the podcasting model, the RSS enclosure contains an audio file, which subscribers can listen to on their devices.

Blogger Gets Secret Service Visit
Blogger Gets Secret Service Visit 11.05.04 A writer on popular blog-site LiveJournal has posted of her nightmare ordeal with the US Secret Service, an event spurred by a posting she made to her blog criticising George Bush prior to the Presidential Election earlier this week. Whilst the offending post has been removed - to spare other users further Federal interference, according to author 'anniesj' - you can see her account of events in full, which has been left as a word to the wise. Secret Service came a-knockin' on Annie at 9:45 PM, but arrived quickly at the conclusion that she wasn't a threat to National Security, more a chick living at home with her mum. Nonetheless, they made sure she got a file at the FBI including her photo, email, and medical records. I guess those boys really like to give the full service. Full Article
